Driveway Design & Construction

Most East Texas Contractors consider “driveway construction” as nothing more than adding a layer (or layers) of rock.  Some offer “free spreading” if you purchase rock from them….however, this can get very expensive quickly and with the varying East Texas soils, you can lose your investment in a very short timeframe!

Similar to our pond/lake issue, we found out firsthand that a lot of time and money can be spent on a driveway.  North Forty Farms has about 1 foot of sandy loam before transitioning to red clay. Neither of which (without stabilization) are good for moderate to heavy traffic.  As such, we spent as LOT of money (that wasn’t budgeted) to get our driveway constructed, and quite frankly was never satisfied with the results.  So again, let us share our experiences to help you.

Most importantly, the base soils for the road need to be properly stabilized to support the weight and amount of traffic.  We offer several types of stabilization; mechanical, chemical, and geotextile fabrics.  Each has a time and place that performs best  – so knowing which to use in a particular circumstance can save thousands.

Mechanical Stabilization is the most common, but not always the most effective or efficient.  This is simply using equipment designed to compact soils and rock (like large rollers used on highway construction).

Chemical Stabilization is not quite as common, but often used on highway construction.  Knowing what chemical reacts best with YOUR soils is very important.  Lime, Portland Cement and Specialty Products (TerraZyme) are some of the chemicals used to stabilize soils.

Geotextile fabrics are used to hold rock near the surface of driveways and also help prevent grass from growing. There are several types and designs for various applications (and prices range from moderate to very expensive).

In addition to the information above, there is also the design and construction (slope/crown/ditchline, etc) of the driveway itself.

Please, don’t have someone just “spread rock”; give us a call first to schedule a free consultation and we will help simplify and streamline the process.
